This course takes about 30 minutes. You can stop at any point and pick up where you left off.

It is for supervisors. Leading hands, crew leaders, shift supervisors, trainers, small business owners and anybody who has a young or newly started worker reporting to them. You do not need any legal background.

The point of it

Young workers are not injured more often because they are careless. They are injured more often because everything is new, because nobody has told them which rules are the real ones and because they are the least likely person on site to say that something does not look right.

All three of those are things a supervisor can do something about. That is what this course is about.

What it covers

  • Who counts as a young worker, and who else the same thinking applies to
  • What the law actually asks of you, which is more specific than people expect
  • The age limits that are hard limits, and the ones that do not exist
  • Why supervision is a weaker control than it looks on a risk assessment
  • What to do in the first day, the first week and the first month
  • How to make it possible for a young worker to stop a job or raise a concern

What it is not

General information for Australia, not legal advice. The health and safety duties are much the same across the country, with Victoria using different wording, and the child employment rules differ state by state. Check your own jurisdiction before relying on the age limits in unit 5.
